You’ve completed step one, got yourself a website, and now you’re ready to dominate the digital world! One of the best ways to make sure Google knows your website is current is by always introducing new content. That’s where our list of blogging tips comes in!
Do: Stay On Target
If you want to start a blog to rant, vent, explain, and expand on every idea that pops into your head, all the power to you! Just don’t do that on your company blog.
When blogging for your business, be sure to focus on things your audience will find interesting, or better yet, useful. For example, and this is purely hypothetical, if you create websites, you could write a blog that includes a bunch of blogging tips.
Don’t: Keep Things Too Short
There’s a fine balance you’re going to need to strike between a blog that’s too short and one that’s too long. A good sweet spot is 500 to 800 words.
The biggest obstacle to getting the right length is choosing the right topic. Too broad and you’ll quickly realize packing all that information into less than 1000 words is going to be really tough. Too narrow, and you’ll be packing a lot of useless information into the blog just to hit 500.
Do: Keep Things Simple
Many people think that keeping things simple refers to avoiding flowery and complicated language, but it’s a bit more nuanced than that.
Firstly, while you do want to keep readability high by avoiding too many lengthy or relatively unknown words, this doesn’t mean you should get lazy! There are so many exciting, exceptional, extraordinary words you could be using instead of just saying “great”.
Second, keep paragraphs short. Two to three sentences should be all you need to hit the point you wanted to make.

Don’t: Create Walls Of Text
A blog is not a book. Most people who see a post with 10 uninterrupted paragraphs in a row, will quickly lose interest.
Blogging is a unique format, and you should play to its strengths. One of those strengths is its skimmable nature. Create lists, bullet points, and break up sections using subheadings to allow people to quickly find information that resonates with them.
Do: Share Your Blogs On Social Media
While effective blogging can often mean improving your search engine optimization, it doesn’t mean that it’s the only way to get it in front of your audience.
If the content you create is genuinely useful (more on that in the next section), sharing it across your social media accounts is a fantastic way to boost views and keep you top of mind.
Don’t: Try To Sell Something
Yes, the ultimate goal of your blogging efforts is to drive more customers to your business. However, that should be a long-term goal, not a short-term one.
People are pretty good at sniffing out if something isn’t genuine. Being helpful, followed by a sell, is just a sell. Instead of trying to figure out how a consumer will move directly from your blog to make a purchase, just focus on creating genuinely helpful content.
The chances of someone reading your blog during the exact window they need your product or service is pretty low. The goal is to stay top of mind, so when they eventually do need a product or service like yours, it’s the first one they think of, and they’re happy to give you the business.
Do: Have Fun With It!
People don’t want to read stiff, boring blogs.
Let your brand’s personality shine through, and use the passion you have for your business to create unique content. Content that only your expertise can provide!
